With a history in delivering education dating back to 1824, Manchester Metropolitan University is a public university based in the north of England. The educator has over 38,000 students studying across five faculties and 13 research centers, and over 5,000 staff.
Challenges
The university had a pre-existing WordPress site that was used as the main news channel for staff, but it was failing to meet the organization’s needs.
An internal survey identified three key areas of focus. People wanted better access to news and updates. They asked for improved findability of policies, procedures, and important documents, and they called for an enhanced People Directory to build connections between staff.
Solutions
- To ensure the right content is surfaced for different users, the team performed an initial content audit. Content was tagged and marked up to ensure maximum findability through Search when added to the intranet. Assigning Best Bets tags and continuing to revisit content analytics to identify gaps ensure the intranet remains useful and used.
- As part of the information architecture and restructuring of the site, the Manchester Met team decided not to take a departmental or team-based approach to the intranet. The top-level navigation is dedicated to the sharing of information across the entire staff, avoiding siloes in individual team areas.
- To ensure some consistency and to help with the transition to the new platform, the look and feel of the intranet was customized to Manchester Met’s external brand and website.
